SOER for Lebanon

SOER for Lebanon

SES in joint venture with Ecocentra sarl have recently been rewarded by UNDP to develop the National State of the Environment Report (SOER) for the year of 2020. The purpose of the report is to update environmental sector data, analyse the information and prepare a report that covers a comprehensive overview of the current State of the Environment for Lebanon

Several State of the Environment reports have been published in Lebanon since 1995; the last of which was in 2010. Such types of assessments are needed to give an overview of the condition of natural resources across the country, including data collection for the various sectors, analysis of existing conditions and to prioritize the needed intervention in the sector. These reports also provide an opportunity to prioritize the most critical areas of concern that need to be tackled at the national level.
The main issues that will be tackled are as follows:
-         Environmental governance and structures (legislation, sectoral policies, etc.)
-         Polluting sectors that include the following topic:
o   Solid waste management
o   Water and wastewater
o   Air pollution
o   Climate Change and Energy
o   Land cover and land use (including haphazard urbanisation)
o   Quarries
o   Ecosystems and natural resources
o   Chemical Management
-         Overview of the affected natural resources (Water, Air, Land/Soil, Biodiversity); and
-         Prioritisation of needs and sectoral action plans
-         Financial Analysis of the impact of environmental degradation on the economy of Lebanon at large.
-         Regional Action Plan covering 2 governorates that covers the various sectors to determine a sustainable local environmental action plan for the region.
